A Monumental Body of Work

Dr. R. Sathyanarayana's scholarly output is staggering in its scope and depth. Over the course of more than seven decades, he produced treatises, research papers, books, translations, lecture-demonstrations and original compositions that together exceed 20,000 printed pages. His work bridges the worlds of science and art, written in Sanskrit, Kannada and English with equal felicity.

A teacher of Chemistry by profession, he was a musicologist by calling. His unique analytical mind, trained in the exactitudes of physical science, lent a rare precision and rigour to his musicological and danceological investigations. He wrote Sanskrit treatises on music and dance in the traditional śāstric mode, while his English-language works addressed international audiences of scholars and practitioners.

Fields of Contribution

Musicology (Saṅgīta Śāstra)

As an internationally reputed musicologist and President of the Indian Music Congress, Dr. Sathyanarayana made foundational contributions to the theoretical understanding of Karnataka classical music, particularly in the areas of śruti, rāga, tāla and compositional forms.

Danceology (Nṛtya Śāstra)

His scholarship extended to dance, where he produced Sanskrit treatises and critical studies that illuminated the connections between music and dance in the Indian classical tradition, drawing on the Nāṭyaśāstra and its vast commentarial literature.

Indology (Bhāratīya Vidyā)

As a public speaker on Indological disciplines, he contributed to the broader understanding of Indian civilisational heritage, the Sanskrit literary tradition, and the interconnections between science, philosophy and the performing arts in Indian thought.

Teaching and Mentoring

For 35 years at Sarada Vilas College and throughout his life as a guru, he trained generations of musicians, scholars and students, maintaining the guru-śiṣya paramparā as a living, breathing tradition of knowledge transmission.

Sanskrit Scholarship

The title Mahāmahōpādhyāya, the highest traditional honour for Sanskrit scholars, was conferred in recognition of his mastery of the language and his contributions to Sanskrit literature, especially in the domain of the śāstric arts.

Science and the Arts

With a Ph.D. in Chemistry and a Master's in the subject, he brought a unique scientific temperament to his musicological work. His analysis of śruti and intonation drew upon physical acoustics and mathematical precision, enriching the discourse of both science and art.
