A Polymath Rooted in Tradition

Dr. R. Sathyanarayana (9 May 1927, Ramanagara - 16 January 2020, Mysuru) was an internationally acclaimed musicologist, danceologist, Indologist, and scholar of extraordinary breadth. A native of Ramanagara and long resident of Mysuru, he devoted his life to the study, preservation and propagation of Indian classical arts, Sanskrit scholarship and the sacred traditions of Karnataka music.

Belonging to the illustrious lineage of the saint-composer Sadguru Tyāgarāja, Dr. Sathyanarayana embodied the guru-śiṣya paramparā in its fullest sense. He was at once a teacher, researcher, administrator, orator, writer and mentor, whose contributions spanned over seven decades.

His intellectual range was remarkable: he held a Master's degree in Chemistry from the University of Mysore, a Ph.D., and multiple D.Litt. degrees from Mysore University, Hampi University (Honoris Causa), and the Karnataka State Dr. Gangubai Hangal Music and Performing Arts University. Between 1949 and 1984, he served as Professor of Chemistry at Sarada Vilas College, Mysuru, while simultaneously teaching Karnataka music and pursuing original research in musicology and danceology.
